Palos Fine Arts Scholarships 2016 Winners


Palos Fine Arts was founded in 1984 to stimulate, promote and present the arts in the Palos area. By recognizing the importance of the arts in everyone’s life, it was natural to establish a scholarship program. Palos Fine Arts has been awarding scholarships since 1991. What better way to stimulate the arts than to support young artists or educators as they pursue knowledge in their chosen art form.

Palos Fine Arts is offering scholarships in the following categories for the 2016 season. These scholarships are offered to high school students in their JUNIOR or SENIOR year and must be in music, visual arts, theater, creative writing or dance.

Our 2016 Winners are:

Cathy Holmes-Weigel Scholarship Music/clarinetist Carl Sandburg Junior

As a freshman Amer placed 1st chair in orchestra in the Illinois Education Association All-District Festival basically making him the number one overall clarinetist (in the district). He has gone on to be a member of the Merit Music Program in Chicago, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and the ILMEA All-State Honor Band where he was first chair and a featured soloist, as well as a member of the National Honor Society. He will be using his scholarship money to attend Brevard, North Carolina from June through August.




Donna O’Brien Memorial Scholarship Dance Carl Sandburg Senior

Kathy has exceeded expectations in all aspects of her involvement, including academics, athletics and community participation. An Honor Roll student she has been a member of Eaglettes Poms team (captain) and Orchesis dance troupe while at Sandburg. For the last eight years she has been a part of the American Dance Center taking classes in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, hip hop and pointe. She will enter Western Michigan in the fall and will major in dance and business.



Palos Fine Arts Scholarship Visual Chicago Christian Senior

Deborah is a talented young artist with a strong desire to improve, learn, explore and continually stretch herself beyond her comfort zone. She has exhibited in a number of art shows including CCHS’s Fine Arts Festival and MV High School Art Show taking high awards in both. She has also received honors for drawings submitted at a Dick Blick sponsored art competition. She will continue her studies to become an art teacher this fall at Trinity College.










Palos Fine Arts Scholarship Vocal Performance Victor J Andrew Senior

Maria has been in a number of musicals throughout her time at Andrew HS and has been an exemplary actress in every role. She is consistent, takes direction well and is an incredible quick study. The roles she has played are also quite memorable. The challenges she chooses for herself are always accomplished and she has taken many awards and honors during her high school career. She plans on continuing her training in musical theater when she enters college this fall.



Palos Fine Arts Scholarship Visual/Photography Sandburg Junior

The passion of photography is a new one for Sydney. Her body of work combines two things she loves, music and photography. With the instruments she photographs she wants to change people’s perspective of the instruments and remind them of its beauty. She feels it’s important that the hands of the musician are included as an instrument is not beautiful by itself…it is beautiful because of the music the musician produces. Her teacher describes her as very hardworking, outgoing and involved in many activities within Sandburg’s community. Her scholarship will go to help fund her attendance the “School of Creative and Performing Arts” (SOCAPA) in New York this summer.
