Palos Fine Arts is happy to announce this year's awardees of our annual scholarships.
Each year at the Concert in the Park, which we co-host with the Village of Palos Park - Palos Fine Arts has a Scholarship Raffle. The proceeds of the raffle benefit our scholarship fund. Palos Fine Arts also receives special funding from the community, former Palos Fine Arts board members and/or their families for our special scholarships.
2019 PFA Scholarship Awardees
PALOS FINE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ($800.00)
Yasmeen Husein, a junior at Victor J. Andrew, wowed her teacher at their first meeting. He went on to say, “She was born to draw” although she did not really believe in the natural gifts she possesses. As she became more passionate about her art, she enrolled in a Drawing/Painting course at the Art Institute of Chicago and intends on using her PFA scholarship toward another class for high school students there this summer. After graduation in 2020, Yasmeen wants to enroll at AIC and work toward an Art Education degree.
Julia Krol will graduate from Carl Sandburg, follow her passion of visual arts at MVCC in the fall, and then continue her degree at a fine arts based college in the future. She says she has been drawing forever and that her imagination carries her across the broad spectrum of illustration, animation and concept art but says she is also fascinated in interior and fashion design, media design, forensic illustration and digital art. Julia’s creative endeavors have won her a number of awards this year: Silver Key at the Regional Competition of Scholastic Art & Writing Competition/ Exhibition; Recognition of Merit in Drawing at the IL. High School Exhibition; and Second Place at Moraine Valley High School Art Exhibition. She feels art is limitless and she is excited to see where her imagination will lead her.
A fashionista since she was eight, this Carl Sandburg senior, Jazmine Thomas has a bright future as she heads to MVCC to study design for two years and then travel to Europe to continue learning about the fashion industry. She describes herself as “one creative, open minded, colorful child” who cut up clothing to create her own designs. Jazmine’s strength in fashion design paired with her outgoing and fun loving personality will make her an excellent addition to the world of fashion.
PALOS FINE ARTS DONNA O’BRIEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER ($1000.00)
This Mother McAuley National Honor Society senior, Nicole Hozzian will attend Cardinal Stritch University to continue her journey in art and a BA in Art Education and Science. Her long-range plans include attending UIC to obtain a Master Degree in Medical Illustration. She says her biggest motivator was her dad who taught her the artistic skills she has become so successful using. This outgoing AP art student is involved in many school activities and is extremely creative, intelligent, self-disciplined, determined, skilled and talented. Besides her outstanding classroom work, she has received several awards including Scholastic Art & Writing Competition, IL High School Art Exhibition, Franklin Framing Gallery Senior Exhibit and having her artwork purchased for the Advocate Christ Hospital permanent collection. She strives to attain a job that will bring joy to her every day and allow her to share her work with the world.
